SEO: The Missing Cash-Cow

03 June 2013 Written by

The Internet is disruptive - disruptive in the sense that it has caused a dramatic change in people’s behaviour, it has changed the way we interact, shop, bank, learn, travel etc. So having your website rank well in search engines when people are looking for a product, service or resource your business provides is critical to the success of your business, but achieving such prime status on search engines is not a simple matter.

To cut the story short what this is all about is getting leads (customers) from search engines. Search is a global phenomenon. According to comScore the leading internet statistics company – more than 158 billion searches is performed each month globally. That means an approximate of 5.1 billion searches every day. This makes search engines a very powerful marketing channel and the best part is you are likely to record a turnover (sales) from most customers that find your business through search, without really spending huge on advertising. This is because the user is actually looking for the information that brought out your website in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs).

Your main objective in search engine marketing is to increase your website ranking or position in the SERPs for keywords related to your business. The catch is this – the distance you are from the first page will make a huge difference in the amount of traffic you get from search engines.
In the table below a research by Microsoft shows the click through rates of results by pages.

Position (page) Click Through Rates
1st 89%
2nd 33%
4th 17%
5th 17%
7th 6%

After laying the preceding foundation it’s a good time to introduce – Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Search Engine Optimization is a powerful but often neglected marketing tool for any business with an online presence. Simply put, SEO is the art of increasing the position of a website on search engine result pages (SERPs).

As with many paths to success, there are black and white SEO marketing techniques. The Black techniques involve the use of shady practices and spam while the White techniques is about using standard and ethical SEO practices.

Examples of Black SEO marketing techniques are: cloaking, using hidden links, useless commenting on blogs just to include URL etc. You have to stay away from this black SEO techniques or marketers that use this technique, because it will eventually be discovered by the search engine and your website will ultimately get removed entirely from the search engine index. Am sure you don’t want to see that happen :)

Examples of White SEO marketing techniques include: creating quality contents, building legitimate links, having relevant keyword strategy, website professionally designed for SEO etc. White SEO practices might not bring instant results but the impact is long lasting and worth the wait.

Now, what’s next? Answer: Get SEO experts to review and do an audit of your present SEO status and fix whatever is broken to position your business to reap from organic search engine prospects. And we can do just that for you – Gavaar.
